Maxi Jazz, chanteur du groupe de musique électronique britannique Faithless, était unanimement apprécié et reconnu pour son appart artistique à la dance britannique, depuis la fin des années 1990.

DÉCÈS - De la scène de Glastonburry aux travées du stade de Crystal Palace. MaxiJazz, DJ et chanteur du groupe britannique Faithless, est mort a annoncé le groupe ce samedi 24 décembre. L’artiste, de son vrai nom Maxwell Fraser, est mort «paisiblement dans son sommeil», à son domicile dans le sud de Londres vendredi 23décembre, selon le groupe, connu pour les morceaux «Insomnia» et «God is a DJ».

En revanche, les causes du décès de l’artiste de 65ans n’ont pas été précisées.

«Nous avons le cœur brisé d’annoncer queMaxiJazzest mort paisiblement dans son sommeil la nuit dernière», a tweeté samedi le groupe, rendant hommage à l’un des membres fondateurs de Faithless en 1995.

«C’était un homme qui a changé nos vies de tant de manières. Il a donné une véritable signification et un message à notre musique», a poursuivi le groupe, saluant un «être humain charmant, qui avait du temps pour tout le monde et une sagesse à la fois profonde et accessible».

«Le poète de la musique dance»

Faithless s’est fait connaître au milieu des années 1990, et a rapidement connu le succès du public et de la critique pour son album «Insomnia», au point d’apparaître comme des pionniers de la dance musique à l’époque.

Une place à part dans l’écosystème de la musique britannique bien résumée par le DJ David Pearce, également précurseur de ce genre musical outre-Manche. Auprès de la BBC, le DJ a qualifié le groupe de Maxi Jazz de «force emblématique de la musique dance britannique à partir du milieu des années 90», précisant que le chanteur était «le poète de la musique dance», rien que ça.

Le groupe, qui compte parmi ses autres membres Rollo et Sister Bliss, a sorti six autres albums studio ainsi que plusieurs compilations. Leur disque le plus récent, «All Blessed», est sorti en 2020, pendant la pandémie de Covid-19, mais sans Maxi Jazz. Séparé du reste de Faithless depuis 2011, Maxi Jazz avait toutefois poursuivi sa carrière en fondant le groupe Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys, avec lequel il tournait encore.

Sister Bliss a toutefois rendu un hommage vibrant à l’artiste, en partageant sur Twitter une photo de lui en noir et blanc, envoyant de «l’amour à tous ceux d’entre vous qui ont partagé notre parcours musical».
